of Helmshore village
The Wavell House project has been an opportunity to create individual apartments that capture the wealth and historic interest that are the two buildings 'The Power Mill' and 'The Loom'.
'The Power Mill' previously named 'The Middle Mill' was one of four Mills in the local area. The existing textile mill formerly called 'The Higher Mill' with the remaining two being called 'The Tan Pits Dye Works' and 'Bridge End Mill', all run by the Turner family.
The formerly named 'Middle Mill' was first used as a weaving mill, originally seven stories high and amongst the first to utilise 'Power Looms'. This sparked a riot by disgruntled employees in 1826 where it is understood to have resulted in a fire and as a consequence the damaged upper floor was removed as part of the remedial works.
All four Mills closed in 1852 following William Turner's death. The Whittaker family then took over the mills in the 1920's and utilised the same machinery and operations until 1967.
Air Tours purchased this Mill in 1991 and ceased trading in 2004. Many elements of the original and subsequent alterations and repairs whilst in Air Tours ownership are of a high quality and has given us the opportunity to expose these to create interest and to celebrate its historic heritage.
'The Loom', whilst being constructed post 'The Power Mill', retains elements of historic interest. Being previously constructed for and owned by the former 'Air Tours' to a high standard has allowed various elements to again be exposed to reflect the strengths and wealth of the former company.
All of the apartments include individual features where possible such as balconies, internal bridges, mezzanine floors, exposed steel and stone work, high levels of light and high vaulted ceilings.
The apartments and communal areas have succeeded in representing a journey through time offering luxurious accommodation without compromise that includes original features not found on modern new build developments but have the same acoustic and thermal performance.
